Mr. A and I have been craving for shabu shabu for a few weeks now and last Sunday I chanced upon a post from Booky (app). It’s a restaurants & deal app that let’s you book a table right off it; you just tap the button and it sends the reservation to the restaurant. It requires at least 30 minutes before your actual reservation.
This is not a paid post or anything, I just found it efficient. Plus it has discounts (less Php 500 for a minimum of Php 1000, etc.) so it’s not that bad. The app itself has lists of restaurants around the metro, you can search by cuisine or by area.
Going back, I chanced upon Nikuya and decided to book a table through Booky. It was a smooth ‘transaction’ and we received a confirmation in less then 10 minutes. Instructions and some guidelines were included in the text message. Good thing I checked my phone after we ate because there was a follow up message for a free dessert just by answering the survey. Which I didn’t mind, of course. 🙂 We got a free Melona ice cream for it (buy just 1, boo :P).
Nikuya is located in Estancia Malls, Capitol Commons in Pasig. It’s outside the actual mall facing the open area/park. Upon arriving, I mentioned that I had a reservation under Booky and was brought to a table with the “Reserved” table marker; the place was not full since it was past lunch time but still it’s nice to know that they actually reserved a table. I’m partial to this detail since I’ve already been to restaurants where I booked a reservation via phone (actually talking to a person) but still lost the reservation on the actual day. It’s not too big a space but it did not feel cramped. The tables have slots for the charcoal grill and the shabu shabu. They also have a number of steak selections in a display chiller by the bar and they were so tempting. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to take a photo. Per the menu, they use Japanese Black Cattle for their shabu shabu and charcoal grill but for Japanese A5 Wagyu guests can refer to the display chiller and choose an ‘upgrade’.
We were given complimentary appetizers so we didn’t feel the need to order off their appetizers list. We already finished this before our orders came and we asked for another one but it wasn’t free anymore so we didn’t bother, hehe. We were also prepping ourselves for the shabu shabu. 🙂 We also ordered the Raspberry Iced Tea and Lychee Green Tea (Php 168 by the glass or Php 328 for carafe).
Since our lunch trip was all due to the shabu shabu (Php 598), this is what we ordered. The soup can be ‘refilled’ but if you want more add ons, some items can be ordered separately. The shabu shabu comes with a platter of assorted vegetables, fish balls, squid balls, and O-ding sticks (fish); you can pick 2 kinds of stock – we had the pork & chicken (pork & chicken bones boiled overnight) and sukiyaki (sweet soy based stock). We ordered additional pork belly to go with the soup (Php 188); other options are chuck roll (Php 558) and ribeye (Php 808). The other 2 stock options are Dashi Kombu (light seaweed stock) and Curry (spicy curry stock, additional Php 128).
For the Robatayaki or their yakitori choices, minimum order was 6 assorted sticks. Since they had 5 different kinds, we ordered 1 of each plus an extra asparagus one. But the server came back saying that they were out of stock of the Yakitori (chicken thigh, with choice of teriyaki or salt & pepper Php 88) and Negima (chicken thigh & leeks, Php 78) so we ended up with 3 sticks of Wagyu Aspara Yaki (asparagus wrapped in wagyu, Php 138), 2 sticks of Wagyu Enoki Yaki (enoki mushrooms wrapped in wagyu, Php 128) and 1 stick of the Uzura Buta Yaki (boiled quail egg wrapped in pork belly, Php 88).
We were so full by the end of our meal! Well, I guess because the shabu shabu can feed around 2-3 persons, hehe! We weren’t able to finish it and they allow take out which is good since you don’t waste a single drop of the delicious stock. We asked for the bill and the Booky discount of Php 500 was already applied. As mentioned earlier, we got a free dessert for answering the survey. It was a banana flavored Melona ice cream; I thought we were getting one each, but nope, we only get one. 🙂 Mr. A wants to try the wagyu beef in the display chiller, so we’ll probably go back if just for that. 🙂
